THE LAKE INCIDENT : SANTA CLARITA - A brush fire near Golden State (5) Freeway north of Santa Clarita burned 712 acres was 85 percent contained at midafternoon today, fire officials said. An estimated time of full containment was not immediately known, she said. The fire had prompted authorities to close a southbound lane on Interstate 5 at the bottom of the downgrade near Castaic Lake, and prompted houses on two streets in a nearby subdivision to be evacuated for four hours as precaution. It was first reported near the lower freeway crossover bridge at Castaic at about 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Originally reported as about a quarter-acre blaze, the fire quickly grew to more than 40 acres within 30 minutes before spreading across nearly 600 acres. ``(The fire) is burning right up against the 5,'' fire Inspector Keith Mora said Friday. The old Ridge Route Road was closed at Pine Crest Place, north of Lake Hughes Road. U.S. Forest Service crews were also sent to help battle the blaze, which was burning in medium to thick brush, fire officials said. Mora said structures were threatened, and 19 homes were evacuated -- four on Elk Ridge Road and 15 on Vista Point Place. Evacuation orders were lifted around 5:30 p.m. Friday, he said. The flames were initially bearing down on the campus of Northlake Hills Elementary School on Ridge Route Road north of Pine Crest. Students were placed on lockdown, but were systematically released Friday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

LACOFD FIRE STATION 150 OPENNING : Hundreds showed up for Fire Station 150's opening Friday, including elementary students, Los Angeles County Fifth District Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar and members of the community. The "state-of-the-art" station on Golden Valley Road, across from the Kohl's shopping center, will be the headquarters for Battalion 22, fire officials said. “This will be the third fire station in Canyon Country and will be the new Division III Headquarters, as well as our Battalion 22 Headquarters in the SCV,” said Stephanie English, Community Services Liaison for LACoFD. Also the 14th fire station in the Santa Clarita Valley, 19,000-square-foot facility, houses the Hazardous Material Task force 150, which includes an engine with four firefighters and a HazMat squad with five firefighters. “Our number one mission is to protect lives and property by having a station closer and more proximal to calls so [firefighters] can get there quicker," said Fire Chief Daryl Osby. "This new fire station is also community oriented, we invite community members to come to the station and visit.” The grand opening of Fire Station 150 was also an open house where community members were given tours around the facility lead by Firefighters and Explorers of the LACoFD. The station has community rooms and is veiled with artwork from count Arts Commission Art Program. LACOFD HORSE RESCUE PLACERITA CANYON : A horse is recovering well today after falling through a wooden bridge at the Placerita Nature Center Saturday, a fire official said. Shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday, a horse walking across a pedestrian bridge at the Placerita Nature Center fell causing three of its feet to go under the wood railing trapping the animal, said Inspector Bernard Peters of the Los AngelesCounty Fire Department. “The horse slipped through the bridge and it took time to sedate the horse,” he said. Firefighters called in a veterinarian who sedated the horse while they worked removing pieces of the bridge in order to free the animal, Peters said. “It was a three hour ordeal,” he said. “But, the horse is fine.” The horse suffered minor injuries to its lower legs, but did not appear to be serious. One of the witnesses watching the rescue said the injuries did not appear serious.

LACOFD_"PINE IC" TRAIN VS SEMI : SANTA CLARITA - A collision between a commuter train a tractor- trailer carrying cars was under investigation in Newhall today. The accident on tracks along the 23600 block of Pine Street was reported shortly before 9:40 p.m. Saturday, and three Metrolink passengers who complained of unspecified injuries were taken to a hospital to be checked out, a Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher said. A woman who had been in the big rig told SCVNews.com that she and her partner, who had been driving, were from out of town and got lost on Pine Street. She said they were trying to get the rig turned around, and her partner got out of the cab as the train bore down on it. Metrolink No. 271 was northbound from Union Station, with about 220 passengers and due to arrive in Newhall at 9:40 p.m., when the accident happened near the Saugus Train Station & Museum. Metro sent buses to the ferry stranded train riders to their destinations. The collision caused about 100 gallons of diesel fuel to leak out of the truck, a county fire dispatcher said. THE WILLIAMS FIRE : LOS ANGELES - An estimated 800 firefighters were clearing new fire lines and holding existing ones in hopes of containing the Williams Fire that has burned more than 4,000 acres in the San Gabriel Canyon in the Angeles National Forest, according to a U.S. Forest Service update. After two days of clearing an area of brush to contain the fire, it was still around only five percent of the fire, officials said. They expected to have a line around the entire fire that is burning in medium to heavy chaparral and mixed conifers by Thursday, September 13th. It was moving to the north- northeast in an area that has not burned in 15 to 20 years, authorities said. The acreage was revised downward from 4,000 acres due to more accurate mapping. The air attack was expected to continue, with 11 air tankers and 10 helicopters, officials said. A DC-10 tanker made two drops Sunday. Firefighters also planned to protect structures in the Camp Williams area, officials said. Camp Williams and the San Gabriel Canyon were ordered evacuated, but 25 people decided to stay anyway. The fire began about 2:15 p.m. Sunday in the Camp Williams trailer park, along East Fork Road off of San Gabriel Canyon (39) Road, L'Tanga Watson of the U.S. Forest Service said. There was a search Monday for three hikers who were reported stranded in the San Gabriel Canyon near the Williams Fire, a county fire department supervisor said. ``We sent out a search and rescue helicopter and searched the area they were reportedly in but we found nothing,'' county fire Dispatch Supervisor Art Marrujo said. ``So we called off the search at 2:38 p.m. and recalled the helicopter.'' The hikers were reported stranded in the east fork of the San Gabriel Canyon near the Bridge to Nowhere, a popular hiking destination on East Fork Road above Azusa, according to the county fire department.

THE "COPCO" BRUSH FIRE NEAR GORMAN : LOS ANGELES - A brush fire has burned 145 acres in the Angeles National Forest near Gorman so far today, as county firefighters continue their battle to knock it down, officials said. At 11 p.m. the fire was reportedly 20 percent contained, but ``mostly knocked down,'' said Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatch supervisor Robert Diaz. The blaze was reported at 11:45 a.m. in the Angeles National Forest near Gorman, and was visible from nearby freeways, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol. The fire area was reduced from 200 acres to 145, Diaz said. The fire was partially knocked down during the day with help from helicopter water drops, he said. About 100 firefighters remain on the scene to clear lines of fuel around the fire to contain it, and mop up any flames that flare, said Diaz. It is estimated full containment won't be completed until Sunday evening, if it is not windy, Diaz said. No structures were threatened and no evacuations were ordered, county fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

OASIS IC - BRUSH FIRE : WRIGHTWOOD - A brushfire that raced through the ranches and range land on the northern flanks of the San Gabriel Mountains north of Wrightwood -- burning 96 acres and forcing the evacuation of some scattered residences in the Pinyon Hills area -- was 80 percent contained this evening. Firefighters from Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties raced helicopters and ground crews to the blaze, south of Route 138 at the county line. Los Angeles County moved more than a dozen fire engines and crews towards the Antelope Valley from Los Angeles, to cover High Desert fire stations that had sent their resources to the fire. Los Angeles County Fire dispatcher Clyde Taylor said the fire was moving eastward, into San Bernardino County from the county line near Pinyon Hills. Just before 7 p.m. it had burned 96 acres and was 80 percent contained, according to CalFire officials. The fire was reported at 11:42 a.m., and immediately caused firefighters to ask CHP officers and sheriff's deputies to assist in evacuating the scattered ranches and homes on the foothills of the big mountains, northwest of Wrightwood. CHP officers closed eastbound Route 138 at Route 18/Victorville split. When FD arrived they found a "junk yard" type property adjacent to several homes with an undetermined, large amount of containers with chemical products dumped on the site. LacoFD Battalion 16 , Jim Enriquez, named the incident "Live Oak IC" and requested Health Hazmat Team and investigators to respond. No evacuations were called yet. LACoFD EMMA IC BRUSH FIRE : AGUA DULCE - A fire that burned 32 acres of brush today and damaged a bridge just off the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway near Agua Dulce Canyon has been fully contained, a county fire official said. The fire was reported at 2:47 p.m. on Agua Dulce Canyon Road at the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, Mark Savage of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said Initially, it threatened structures and the blaze was considered a three- alarm fire just before 4 p.m., Savage said. By 4:30 p.m., firefighters were getting the upper hand on the flames and structures were no longer threatened. ``Things are looking good,'' Savage said. ``We will be here all night long mopping up hot spots.' Firefighters had full containment of the blaze as of 6 p.m., he said. No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. A bridge just off the 14 was affected at Agua Dulce Canyon. ``There may be some possible structural damage to the bridge, so public works has been called out,'' Savage said. LACoFD "Oak Incident" Stevenson Ranch : STEVENSON RANCH - A blaze broke out in heavy brush in a steep ravine in the Santa Clarita Valley this afternoon and burned just under 10 acres before firefighters knocked it down nearly 5 1/2 hours later. The fire at Pico Canyon Road and Whispering Oaks Road in the Stevenson Ranch area was reported at 2:08 p.m., said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Frederic Stowers, and reported knocked down at 7:33 p.m., a dispatcher said. Patrols will watch the burn area during the night to make sure it is entirely out. What was dubbed the Oak Fire was apparently sparked by a solo vehicle traffic collision that injured the driver. Stowers said 115 firefighters were initially sent, followed by another 80. About 200 remained on the scene two hours later, along with two helicopters, but one helicopter and a helitanker were released. Crews were helped by lighter-than-normal winds, with relatively mild temperatures and humidity. There were homes on either side of the ridge, but Stowers said none were directly affected. LACoFD HASKELL IC - SANTA CLARITA BRUSH : SANTA CLARITA - One of two 14-year-old boys arrested on suspicion of arson was allegedly smoking marijuana when he accidentally started a brush fire today near Saugus that scorched 43 acres and prompted evacuations, a sheriff's sergeant said. The fire was reported around 2 p.m. near Copper Hill Drive and Haskell Canyon Road, said Supervisor Michael Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. By 6:30 p.m., the fire, which had spread to about 43 acres, was fully contained, Pittman said. Initial reports indicated structures were threatened, and later, 31 homes were ordered evacuated -- 13 on the cul de sac at Brookview Terrace, 13 on Cross Creek Drive, and five on Canterwood Drive, said Parker. The evacuations were later canceled, and no structures were damaged, although the flames licked at some backyards. The two juvenile arson suspects were arrested in the 21100 block of Altena Drive, near where the fire is believed to have started, said Capt. Mike Parker of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. One was taken into custody on suspicion of arson and the other was arrested and then released. Sheriff's deputies believe the fire began when one of the boys was smoking marijuana in a pipe and dropped the 8-inch barbecue iron he was using to light the pot in the dry brush, Parker said. They apparently tried to put out the fire, but ran away when it began to spread, he said. Two other people were arrested for interfering with firefighters. ``They were both in the immediate fire zone, preventing helicopters from dropping water,'' Parker said. Anthony Fierro, 33, and a 16-year-old boy were taken into custody after allegedly refusing to leave the fire area when ordered to do so by fire and sheriff's personnel, Parker said. ``Fierro lives half a mile away from the area and had no business near the fire,'' Parker said. ``At one point he was escorted away from the area, and he made an obscene gesture at deputies then went back to the fire area.'' Parker said the juvenile lives near the fire and was found in the fire area wearing no shoes or shirt. ``He said he was helping stamp out the fire,'' Parker said. ``These two were getting too close to the fire area and were constantly having to be chased. They evaded and avoided firefighters and sheriff's deputies, who had to protect them from themselves.'' With more than 150 firefighters on the scene, no injuries were immediately reported.
